The Performing Arts Department of Central
Theatre is a Central tradition stretching as far back as the 1920s. Although it began as a simple senior play, Central's theatre business evolved into a full-fledged extracurricular activity. However, it wasn't until 1982 that the Performing Arts Department, or PAD, was formed. Mark Zortman joined the school staff and began producing at least one play per year. Eventually, a pattern was reached of annually performing a main-stage play, a musical, and a Black Box play, though a children's play was once popular as well.
Some recent productions at Central York High School include Oliver, Exit Who, Moon Over Buffalo, Spamalot, and Third.
At Central, there is also a Theatre Arts program instructed by Mr. Benjamin Hodge, who joined the staff in 2004. In 2006, the Acting II class performed "Class Action," and ever since then, each Acting II class has had to perform a Black Box play for their final project. The Acting I class also performs either a showcase or a one-act play. Mr. Hodge has begun working with the Upright Citizens Brigade Improv troupe to train young actors in long-form improvisation.
